ATI has been outperforming Nvidia with the launch of its Radeon HD 5870 as well as the Radeon HD 5850 graphic cards. Now, it has launched a graphics card - ATI Radeon 5970 - that is competing for the title of the fastest graphics card. The graphic card is made up of two Cypress GPUs (each containing 2.25 billion transistors) with 1 GB of GDDR5 memory each and is joined by a PLX PCI Express bridge made up of 48 lanes. This PCI bridge may seem to be the same as on the Radeon HD 4870 X2 but has actually been updated for PCI Express 2.1
ATI had to take into account the concerns of users who worked with 750 and 850W power supplies and had to work at keeping the power consumption of the ATI Radeon 5970 under 300 W. Nevertheless, this graphic card had been designed to go up to the frequencies matching those of the Radeon 5870 and also cope up with the thermal load that would have consequently been generated.
