While the Call of Duty has reached dizzying heights of success, this has always made it difficult for the franchise to come up with bigger and better follow-ups. Obviously, gamers wait for every new entry in the franchise series with bated breath hoping that the new version will be even more mind-blowing than the other one. It is not always easy to fill the shoes of a massively popular predecessor but Call of Duty: Black Ops manages to do exactly that and much more.

From start to finish, the game is full of great intensity and is a wonderful mixture of action as well as intrigue. While gamers who have already enjoyed the earlier version of Call of Duty can immediately get into the thick of action, there is a new combat training mode that allows beginners to get used to the feverish-paced excitement in a more gentle way. Using this mode, they can enjoy all the competitive action the game has to offer without being dealt a deathly blow by more experienced veterans. Features such as video editing tools and co-operative zombie killing not only makes this game one of the most feature-filled ones in the market but the kind of shooting gameplay on display is undoubtedly the best so far.
We will first look at the single-player campaign and follow it up with a look at the multiplayer campaign.

The single-player campaign is set mainly in the 1960s and gives you a wonderful feel for the complex political games that were played in those days. Largely told through the flashback scenes of the chief protagonist Alex Mason, the player is described various sequences by Mason. Before you know it, you are launched into a globetrotting adventure that takes you from Cuba to Russia and Vietnam. The beauty of the game is that it is in the form of a puzzle, with each small piece being slowly extracted by interrogating Mason. Every interrogation session takes the player onto a new mission in the field and ends with a small piece of the puzzle being uncovered. Though the storyline may not be entirely new, there is enough drama and many strong characters that lend genuine intrigue to the entire mission. What really grabs you are the wonderful visual effects coupled with haunting audio echoes that form the backdrop of every interrogation session so that the line between the reality of the mission and the interrogation gets fairly blurred. The journey the world over has allowed the developers to provide a startling contrast of geography, taking players speeding across hostile terrain and on mountainous excursions. Not surprisingly, every mission typically plays out in a very taut and highly satisfying climax.

There is no doubt that Call of Duty: Black Ops is one of the top shooting games in the market today and while the single-player version certainly gives enough thrills, now we see how the multiplayer version is equally first-rate.
Call of Duty: Black Ops offers entertainment with non-stop action. Players are taken from one scene to another with hardly any time to think about strategies or the course of action. They have to think on their feet as they are led from an action packed intense shoot-out scenario to one filled with political intrigue.
Within just a couple of hours of beginning the game, players move from battlefronts and hurtle down cliff faces. Their missions range from an assassination attempt on Fidel Castro to chatting with JFK while the action involves harpooning a helicopter or leaping from trucks to trains. Not only do the visual effects leave you stunned but also, the pace of the action can leave you dizzy with excitement.

The single player version, is set in the Cold War era and revolves around the threat to the US from a destructive bioweapon. While there are some very strong characters in play, there are lent even more credibility by the voice-overs done by talented Hollywood stars such as Ed Harris, Gary Oldman and Sam Worthington. While the single-player campaign is certainly impressive, the multiplayer component too carries some heavyweight action scenes. More importantly, along with persistent experience and ranks that they can carry, players in their multiplayer games can earn COD points. They can then use these points to buy more weapons and perks.

At first look the multiplayer campaign may seem very much like the action scenes enjoyed in the previous Call of Duty version that ardent gamers have been enjoying for years. You have persistent experience for doing well in various missions and as you move up form one to another level, you have the power to customize the loadouts. Further, you can keep the action fresh by using new weapons and new geographical scenarios. In fact, one of the main attractions is a wonderfully, deadly weapon – a remote-control car that is laden with explosives waiting to strike. In addition to gaining valuable experience, you also get to collect Call of Duty points that you can then spend on acquiring perks such as weapon attachments, killstreaks or equipment items. While the guns may be unlocked, if you would like to have one in your loadout, you will need to shell out some more points. In fact, being able to pay for the guns gives you more loadout and more options for weapons at even the lower levels, and is certainly more than was possible with previous versions of Call of Duty. Since points are so important in improving your arsenal, it only adds to the player’s motivation to earn more by playing well not to mention the satisfaction of having had a successful mission.

Watching such richly detailed graphics requires a top-end gaming machine along with all the other extras that makes it so satisfying to watch Call of Duty: Black Ops.
