When Nvidia launched their first latest technology graphic cards in the GeForce GTX 400 series, the reception might not have been as warm as they had anticipated. After all, their GeForce GTX 470 and GeForce GTX 480 were supposed to offer hot competition to ATI, which so far has been the dominant player in the DX11 field. However, the graphic cards proved to be fairly noisy and generated a lot of heat though there was general agreement that they did offer superior performance and great speeds.

Nevertheless, this forced Nvidia to go back to the drawing board and come up with a card that could do without the negative features of its predecessors, offer excellent gaming quality and perhaps also make things a little competitive by cutting down on the price. Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 is the solution that matches all these requirements. While the Nvidia GTX 465 was supposed to be a watered-down version of GTX 480, the GTX 460 is a graphics card that has been designed from scratch and delivers high-end performance for a great price.

The GeForce GTX 460 graphic cards may seem small at just 8.25" but continues to have the heat-sink and cooling fan in a dual slot. Further, it has the standard single mini-HDMI-output and two Dual-link DVI outputs. Let us now see what the GeForce GTX 460 is made up of from the inside. It uses a new core called the GF104 based on the Fermi architecture and uses the advanced 40nm processor. The GF104 features 1.95 billion transistors and has only two graphics processing clusters. This is more than enough to accommodate 336 CUDA cores, 7 streaming multiprocessors, 56 texture units and 32 (1 GB) Raster Operations. Since the die size is smaller, it costs less to make, reducing the final price; uses less power and generates less heat.

There is no doubt that with a price tag of just R2,500, this DX11 graphics card is going to attract a lot of passionate gamers. Most players are looking at graphics card that can offer a great gaming experience but for a reasonable price and at R2,500, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 might just be hitting the sweet spot. And there is no doubt about the performing ability of the card. When AA is enabled, Fermi ensures that the GTX 460 can continue to play high-end games at the same quality without seeing any drop in the frame rates. Even at very high loads, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 continues to deliver without taking up too much power and is only reasonably audible.
Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 1 GB not only stacks up nicely against ATI Radeon HD 5850 but it helps build a nice range of cards from Nvidia who now offer gamers a wider collection to choose from. The GTX 460 certainly brings Nvidia back into the game.
