Many consumers might wonder why there is so much excitement about the new Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 Graphics Card, when there already appear to be more powerful players in the market in the form of the GeForce GTX 480 as well as the GTX 460. However, a closer look at the number of gamers or computer enthusiasts who actually use high-end resolutions such as 1680 X 1050 reveals that they form only a small fraction of the total number that buys Nvidia hardware. In fact, surveys have shown that if a large percentage of gamers – close to 60% - prefer Nvidia hardware, just a little more than 25% of them actually use very high resolutions.

The same surveys have also indicated that while the performance of the HD 5700-series cards is stunning, to say the least, not many are able to take advantage of the awesome features they have to offer. A very small percentage – just a little over 5% - actually have an OS that is DX 11 compatible. Further, though there are larger numbers who have Windows 7 that offers DX11 compatibility, the same consumers do not have a DX11-compatible GPU. These numbers have led the development team at Nvidia to come up with a graphic card series that is aimed at all those who are on a budget, are not aiming at the highest of resolutions or the most sophisticated features and yet would like a smart performing graphic card.

 NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450

If you look at the Nvidia GeForce GTS 450, you will not notice anything very complicated in it – in fact, it is probably the most basic GPU built on the Fermi architecture. It boasts of just one Graphics Processing Cluster or GPC, though this GPC is made up of four streaming multiprocessors. Compare this with the mighty GTX 460 that has two GPCs. Essentially the GTS 450 can only handle one raster set-up and four vertex operations since it has just one raster engine and four polymorph engines while the GTX 460 can do twice as much. On the other hand, to offset this, the Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 runs at fairly high frequencies – the core might run at 783 MHz while the GPC runs at an impressive 1566 MHz.

There are some useful features that the Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 has borrowed from the GTX 460. One of these is the stream processor layout that has seen some improvements in the GTX 460 – the GTS 450 uses the same layout allowing 48 units per SM instead of the low 32 per SM of the GTX 470 or 480. In other words, with four streaming multiprocessors, the GTS provides 192 stream processors.

If you are aiming only at high-end performance, the Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 might not be for you. However, with features such as lower power consumption, support for the latest 3D API from Microsoft and better high-definition bitstreaming over HDMI, the Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 offers perfect value for the price you pay.
