We just carried out an in depth analysis of the new Corsair AX1200- a 1200 watt power supply from the house of Corsair, and if you care to read the review, you will know that we were pretty pleased with its overall performance. However, the price of the AX1200 was a little bit more on the higher side, and rightly so as it undoubtedly is one of the better products that you will find on your local stores shelves. But for those, who look at the price tag of the AX1200 with sheer displeasure and wish for an alternative at a more pocket-friendly range, Corsair came up with the AX850 850W 80+ Gold rated modular Power Supply. As of now, from what we have heard, this comparatively lower priced PSU is getting a positive response in the market. So we decided to give it a closer look in order to find out the pros and cons associated with it and help you understand whether or not the product deserves to be there in your tech inventory.
The packaging of the AX850 is not so different from that of the AX1200, meaning a gigantic cardboard box, carrying detailed information on the product. The accessories that you get along with the product are: 1 x ATX 24/20 Pin, 2 x EPS/ATX 12V 8-4 pin, 4 x PCI-E 6+2 pin, 12 x SATA, 8 x 4-pin Peripheral 2 x Floppy, manuals, mains plug etc.
And when it comes to the design, the AX850 looks more or less the same as the AX1200 with its black finished look, blended with white and gold branding.
On opening the casing, you will find the detailed information of its double ball bearing, 12 cm fan manufactured by Sanyo Denki. The 7 blade, 12v/0.19A DC model may not seem as powerful as that in the AX1200, but it still does some pretty decent job in maintaining the temperature. All in all, it’s fair to say that with the AX850, you certainly don’t require to worry much about the cooling-aspect.
There are extra protection shields against potentially harmful occurrences such as over-heating, over current flow or abnormal voltage fluctuation. Hence, it certainly does a more than satisfactory task when it comes to protecting your PC components from power-faults and other such failures.
Similar to the AX1200, the AX850 also comes with a +12 volt rail - 100.4 A, (1204.8 watt), capable of handling high end CPUs as well as multi GPUs in a quite effective way. Other highlighting specs include, a highly reliable, independent DC o/p connector board for 5V and 3.3 V DC outputs, as well as a efficient zero voltage switching design.
Do we recommend it? Yes, highly!
To conclude with, the Corsair AX850 is a product you won’t regret buying- a perfect choice for all those who are looking for a cheaper option to the AX850, but without compromising with the overall performance and reliability.
