Nvidia, over the years, has established itself as a pioneer in the field of graphic processing unit (GPU) and chipset technology. Since its inception, the company has been consistently delivering a number of quality products, especially graphic cards- the GeForce GTX 590 being the latest of them.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 590 Dual GPU Graphics Card

The GTX 590 is a dual GPU graphic card. In layman term, two graphic cards into one. Such cards are particularly useful if the motherboard can accommodate only one card, giving the user the strengths of two. This is the first time over quite a long period being the last one, when Nvidia is attempting a dual product, which indeed, is quite surprising in the frenetically competitive graphic card market. The GeForce GTX 295, which debuted some 2 years back, was the last one from Nvidia in this product line.

About the logo and the overall look, Nvidia has certainly put some extra effort into making the 590 more appealing and they have certainly succeeded to quite an extent in that effort. From its appearance does not indicate it being as massive as the rival HD 6990. However, the specs do not differ that much. It has a glossy and matte combined finish that undoubtedly makes it a stand out amongst its competitors. When powered on properly, the logo lights up with a pretty to look at green/white combination. And not only has that, the LEDs used to light up the logo also worked as an indicator if the board is not being supplied with enough power.

Let’s have a brief look at the specs and the feature: The GTX 590, codenamed as D13U-50 GF110/P1020 is 11’’ x 4.5’’in size, making it slightly bigger than its preceder the GTX 580. The graphic clock is 612 MHz while the processor and the memory clock are near about 1224 MHz and 3420 MHz respectively. The Memory Interface Width (MIW) is 2x384 bit and the CUDA core is 1024.

It certainly is not a walk in the park to cram two high-end GPUs onto a single dual slot expansion card. More often than not, it’s the power and thermal limitations that defines these products. Probably this is why we never got to have a dual GPU version of the GTX 400 series.

It has a central fan that purely indicates a dual-GPU design. There is a pair of hidden cards at the back which helps to cool down the 3GB memory. One more cooling feature is that the rear portion of the heatsink is open, allowing the heat from the second GPU to be exhaust out of the card. The design no doubt will improve the overall cooling. But having mentioned that, it also means that a portion of the hot air will be sucked into the chassis.

It has a thermal design power of 365 watts. The 8 pin power connectors are found towards the end of the PCB and are side facing. A proper power-on of the GTX 590 will require at least 700 watts. Also it is important for the power supply to have a strong 12 volt rails. The list of certified power supplies in the official Nvidia website could be helpful in this regard.

Another major change that Nvidia has brought in with the GTX 590 is the inclusion of three dual link DVI connectors and a mini Display Port which was not in the case of the earlier 500-series models. This has resulted in it being the first single card solution from Nvidia to support Nvidia surround and 3D sound technologies. And adding more colors to these wonderful features, the GTX 590 can also drive four Independent monitors, with each supporting resolutions upto 2560 x 1600 pixels.

The 590 is basically designed to be very efficient and quiet solution- something that does not sacrifice the overall acoustics to achieve a higher performance level, which is unfortunately in the case of its rival HD 6990. The use of a dual vapor chamber thermal solution and an extruded 90 mm intake fan proved to be quite helpful in this regard. The PCB has also been optimized by adding two ounces of copper in both the ground and power layer.

The accessory bundle that accompanies the 590 is not a huge one. But the connectivity option itself makes the need for an adapter minimal. However, a quick install guide, driver and utility disk, dual 6 pin PCIe to eight pin PCIe power adapter and a DVI to d-sub and DVI to HDMI adapters are included in the package.

The tests conducted at various platforms, with multiple games have confirmed the product to be breathtakingly fast- way ahead than the GeForce GTX 580 and nearly as quick as a couple of GTX 570s together.

All in all, the 590 has a pretty impressive, soft-spoken cooling solution. It has a cooler that is vastly quieter if compared to the similar products floating around the market at the time. The acoustic reality, combined with the 11’’ board length and an appealing appearance brings in quite a personality into this product. The main competition till this date, is the HD 6990 from AMD, which, according to many of the testers who tested both the cards, is lagging behind in many ways.

However, the market price, which is going to be somewhere around an MSRP of R7, 500 can make many feel uncomfortable and uncertain about the deal. But it is worth mentioning that this is the exact same price the rivals AMD has also chosen to go with for its HD 6990.
