With the introduction of its new Sandy Bridge CPU range, Intel has ushered in the era of new age computing that promises to give you a richer computer experience. This micro-architecture processor introduced in January this year will replace other similar products from the company like Nehalam. Intel is calling Intel New Sandy Bridge CPUs a second generation i processors as it has been furnished with many advanced features that are quite new.

Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs

Researchers from Intel started working on this processor in 2005 at Intel's Israel Development Center. Intel has announced that this microarchitecture has been used to manufacture the new range of i3,i5 and i7 microprocessors from Intel and some models of these second generation processors have been released in the market also.

Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs Die Shot

This new processor is an improvement from its earlier microarchitecture processors like Nehalam. For instance in earlier versions only dual and six core processors were moved to 32 nm manufacturing process. But in Sandy Bridge, we find that four core processors have been moved to 32nm as well. This is a significant step as cores designed with 32 nm use less power and thus such microprocessors are energy efficient. At present, only dual and quad core processors have been released in the market. Intel intends to launch six core and eight core processors later this year.

Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs Overview

When we look at the architecture of Sandy Bridge we discover that it comes with many distinguishing properties. But perhaps the most prominent one is that it has an integrated graphics processor and consequently, offers you the benefits of two chips in one. Moreover it also reduces heat generation and power loss as it does away with the need to connect the graphics with the CPU. But if you are a gaming aficionado or use graphics quite often you might prefer to have a separate graphics card. Besides integrated graphics Sandy Bridge is also enabled with the Intel Turbo Boost technology that allows your computer to increase its speed according to the demand of the application you are running. The standard clock speed of a Sandy Bridge aided CPU ranges from 2.2 to 3.4 GHz but of course with the Turbo Boost technology you can always increase the frequency up to 3.8 GHz. As far as hyperthreading is concerned, some models created by using Sandy Bridge allow hyperthreading while some others like Intel Core i5 2500K CPU do not.

Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs Highlights

Some other features of this architecture includes 256 bit/cycle ring bus width which will connect the cores efficiently. Each of the CPUs will come with cache line width of 64-byte. As far as thermal design power of these microprocessors are concerned, the desk top variants will have a TDP of 35-95W while the mobile phone variants have been rated at 17-55W. This new architecture also facilitates better performance in transcendental mathematics, AES encryption and SHA-1 hashing.

Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs TurboBoost

We have already mentioned that Sandy Bridge has been used manufacture Intel's i3,i5 and i7 microprocessors. The i3 chipsets are twin core disks and they belong to the low end range of this new series. It will be fitted with certain new properties, for instance the users can view video that has been transferred from their computers to their television. These chips also have anti-piracy technology that will prevent people from copying movies from the internet. But, this product will not be available till February.

Intel has already introduced some chipsets from the i5 series. Intel has launched those microprocessors that have quad core for desktops at present. Chipsets with dual processors for laptops will be launched next month. I5 series of chips have Intel Insider technology, turbo boost, Wireless Display and even a Quick Sync Video. This microprocessor gives a sharper and smoother video experience and works really fast. One microprocessor belonging to this series is the Intel Core i5 2500K CPU. Though it does not have a hyperthreading technology (other models of i5 have this facility) it has a impressive 6MB of Level 3 cache memory. Its RAM could support DDR3 memory but as it has a dual channelled memory system, you will need two RAM cards. This CPU also supports overclocking so it seems to become very popular among people who really crave for overclocking. Another factor that will increase its demand is its price. Intel has fixed its price around R2, 000 which is not much considering the number and quality of features it is offering.

Now let us take a look at the i7 processors that have been designed with this new microarchitecture from Intel. These processors are the high end processors and possesses all the properties present in i5 processors. Besides these features it has certain added advantages that distinguishes it from other second generation CPUs of the Intel family. The six to eight core i7 CPUs for laptops are expected by February this year. Intel has launched Intel Core i7 2600K CPU that has some very promising features. Like other second generation CPUs from Intel, it has powerful Intel Turbo Boost technology that can make your computer run at a frequency of up to 3.8 GHz whenever your computer needs to increase its pace. Unlike Intel Core i5 2500K CPU,it has been equipped with hyperthreading technology that allows you to work simultaneously on two or more projects, thus saving a lot of your time. This CPU also comes with Intel HD Graphics 3000 that has a frequency of up to 1350 MHz and thus provides smooth and seamless service. But as it a very advanced CPU,you will need to acquire a new motherboard.

Intel Sandy Bridge CPU Visual Experience

Overall, we can see that Sandy Bridge offers a great number of features and makes the CPUs work at an amazing speed. It is energy efficient and is available at an affordable price as well. With the launch of this new microarchitecture, Intel has reinstated its remarkable capacity to come up with high-end products from to time. Sandy Bridge thus is a formidable, new and smart product from the family of Intel and the CPUs manufactured by using this technology will no doubt provide world class services.
