AMD has achieved great success with its new generation of video cards, partly because of the competitive pricing and partly because of the impressive performance of the ATI Radeon Premium Graphics. AMD graphic cards have been able to provide gaming experiences unmatched by many of its competitors. And now it leads from the front by coming up with the first graphic card series with DirectX 11 support.

The ATI Radeon 500 series is the first graphic cards series that contains GPU with DirectX 11 support. These cards are built with the well-established 40nm processes and have GDDR5 memory. The goal of AMD was clear while designing the Radeon HD 5800 series – they wanted to borrow what was successful in the Radeon HD 4800 series, improve performance and reduce the price.

Further, they wanted to be amongst the first to implement DirectX 11 support in readiness for the Windows 7 launch. While AMD had DX11 driver support for some time now, with Windows 7 receiving great reviews, they wanted to make sure they had the hardware necessary to support DirectX 11. In addition, they wanted to ensure that the lower end games that were only running DX10 or DX9 would still benefit from the improved performance of the Radeon 5800 series. Since AMD wanted to provide for a better gaming experience than just increase the speed of the graphic cards, they have developed the Eyefinity technology along with improving filtering quality and adding new AA features.

The ATI Radeon HD 5870 in particular has a GPU with a speed of 850MHz and a memory with clock speed of 1.2 GHz, effectively reaching 4.8Gbps. This roughly equates to 153.6Gbps of memory bandwidth at the peak. Though AMD agrees that the maximum board power is a little higher at 188 watts, idle power on the other hand has come down to just 27 watts. This decrease in idle power has been achieved by way of voltage reductions as well as aggressive clocking when the card is not performing at its peak workload.

When the Radeon HD 5870 was put through a series of tests, it delivered excellent results compared to almost every single-GPU powered cards. Performing far better than the highly acclaimed Radeon HD 4890 and the Nvidia GeForce GTX 285, the Radeon HD 5870 is without doubt a highly powerful graphics card. In fact, even when compared to dual-GPU cards, the Radeon 5870 showed excellent performance in all benchmark tests as well as for high-end games.
