There was great excitement when Nvidia launched the GTX 480 (codenamed GF100) but this was dampened somewhat by the actual performance of the card. It was undoubtedly fast but there were major issues regarding the amount of heat levels it generated, power it consumed and the noise it generated. Not surprisingly, the Nvidia GTX 480 did not quite catch the imagination of early adopters or extreme gamers.

Of course, given that there was relentless competition in the market, Nvidia had to quickly go back to the drawing board and re-engineer the GF 100 so that all these initial problems could be ironed out. The results are there for all to see. The new Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 (codenamed GF 110) is phenomenally fast, has amazing features, is quieter and more efficient. A truly impressive comeback.

The first noteworthy feature of this card is quite obviously the speed – the core clock speed has now been increased from the original 700 MHz. Further, the memory clock speeds have been pumped up from 924 MHz of the GTX 480 to 1 GHz. The designers of the GF 110 have also spent some time refining the paths through the GPU so that the data flows are streamlined and efficiency of the card is increased. Other features have also been tweaked including increasing the FP texture performance and so on.

Most importantly, Nvidia has attempted to address old concerns and taken care to see that there is now a new cooling sub-system in place – this includes a vapor chamber instead of the heat pipes used originally in the GTX 480 and a re-designed fan. This new system now ensures that there is increased airflow making sure that the card is cooled down more effectively. The re-designed fan also makes less noise even under heavy load. Not only that it also has a different pitch that makes it more tolerable to work with than the previous card.

It is quite clear that in today’s market, Nvidia’s GTX 580 is the fastest performing GPU and with the kind of features it carries forward, is bound to interest many overclockers and gamers alike. However, the price of this new card at R5,400 is somewhat on the expensive side. Compared to the Radeon HD 5870s that are available for under R3,000 and even the dual GPU Radeon HD 5970 that is available for around R6,000 , a tag of R5,400 does seem a little steep. Extreme gaming enthusiasts and overclockers, though, might not mind this, considering the obvious benefits that the card delivers.
