Nvidia’s new Fermi architecture had been creating a buzz for some time now and though some bits and pieces of this technology had been shown at select technology conferences, it had been under wraps for a sufficiently long time. And who could blame them? Facing hot competition from the folks at ATI, Nvidia probably wanted to make sure that they had every aspect of their card absolutely right before revealing it to the world. Finally, the world did get to see the much-awaited GTX 400 series from Nvidia.

The first thing that you notice about the Nvidia GeForce GTX 470 is its highly competitive price. The 448-core, GTX 470 starts at a very competitive price of R3,800 and is only marginally higher than the leading product from ATI, the popular 5850. Nvidia has also launched another card in this series, the 480-core GTX 480 that is priced at R5,000 and is obviously aimed at the higher-end market. However, for the price that it commands, the GTX 470 seems to have some very impressive features.
The GTX 470 could be considered to be a humbler version of the GTX 480 and is a simple 9 inches long card with two 6-pin PCI-E power inputs and even the cooler cover is fairly plain looking. Of course, there are the standard dual-link DVI ports and the mini-HDMI output and the entire space of the second expansion slot is conveniently left for the hot air vent. From the outside, you might not find anything too remarkable about the GTX 470.
However, as you go into the inner workings of the card, you will soon see the interesting architecture. The GTX 470 has a 40 nm processor with 448 cores and the core runs at 607MHz clock speed. It carries with it 1.28 GB of GDDR5 memory. The GTX 470 has a memory bandwidth of 134 GB/sec and 53 texture units. With features that are only marginally less than the GTX 480, GTX 470 still gives incredible gaming performance at a very reasonable price.
Many of the high-end games were found to run remarkably well with the GTX 470 and when AA is enabled as well as other IQ settings turned up, it can beat the competition by a long mile. Most customers will be using a resolution of around 1920 X 1200 on 27” or less monitors, wherein GTX 470 is found to give a commanding performance, particularly when it came to DX11 games.
The main concerns with the GTX 470, however, as with all GF100-based cards was the kind of heat it gave out and the power it consumed. Even at a lower clock speed, the maximum power consumption for this card is in the 215W range. This factor might just go against the GTX 470 since the competing ATI HD 5850 only consumes 151W even while running at full load. Also, the card does tend to overheat a little while working at heavy loads.
