It seems like only yesterday, Microsoft was advertising the latest API shipping with Windows Vista – DirectX 10. Not only was it supposed to be a completely new design with new features that would enhance the entire gaming experience, it was also supposed to make the task of coding for game developers much easier. However, these major changes were compatible only with Vista and those with older versions such as Windows XP would never be able to use DirectX 10.
Microsoft has now taken another giant leap and introduced DirectX 11 with Windows 7. This API promises to make gaming more exciting and sophisticated.
Let us take a closer look at some new features of DirectX 11.

As mentioned earlier, DirectX 11 is the next stage of the much-acclaimed Microsoft DirectX architecture. API stands for application programming interface and DirectX is a collection of APIs that are a standard for the way coding is to be done for a graphic processing unit. This essentially means that users can run a game written using DirectX on any GPU. Of course, how well the game runs depends on many more factors such as the speed of the hardware but DirectX has allowed certain standardization in games.

Obviously, being the eleventh in line means that DirectX 11 does not come with any major changes from that of DirectX 10 but the few changes that have been incorporated are far more impressive than those in the past as they have led to more sophistication in the games and greater refinery in the scene details.

Here are some standout features in the new DirectX 11.
· Hardware Tessellation: One of the biggest challenges in the gaming industry has been to make games more life like by increasing the details in the scenery. Faster GPUs lead to better games and the demand for better games leads to faster GPUs. However, the amount of details that can be provided in a scene is limited by the amount of memory they take up. The solution for this lies in hardware tessellation. This technique allows for the gradual development of a more advanced set of scenes from a more sparse set of instructions. DirectX 11 games now have to be provided with just one set of tessellation instructions and depending on the level of hardware the user has, the GPU will decide the complexity of the scene to be produced.

· DirectCompute API: DirectX 11 has a great way of carrying out general purpose computing on graphic processing unit or GPGPU acceleration. It is indeed significant that Microsoft now provides a common interface that allows for a particular body of code to be written once but run anywhere. In other words, DirectX 11 GPUs are finally at a stage where they will need just one code to also perform stream-processing jobs such as video encoding or image processing. Further, it will not matter what GPU the code is being run on.
Developers might take some time to adapt and develop code with these features in mind but they are certain to change the way GPUs are seen and used in the future.
