Mouse Pads: Speed, Control or hard pad?

Mouse Pads

When you’re browsing through the variety of gaming mouse pads you will come across a range of different shapes, sizes, hard pads, soft pads and even hybrid pads. But what exactly is the difference between them all. Why should you pay for a top end gaming mouse pad when you could just get a normal mouse pad for pretty much anywhere? Well that's what we are here to find out. What exactly is the difference between all the different kinds of mouse pads and why a gaming mouse pad is a way better option over something that you could find in any random shop.

First off let's start with the three most common types of gaming mouse pads that you can currently purchase on the market:

Hard Pad

                                                                                                                                    Marvo RGB Hard Pad

  1. Hard Pads - Hard pads, like most other mice pads on the market, have a rubber base that prevents the pad from slipping when you’re using it during high intensity situations. The hard pad consists of a piece of plastic as the main pad, it allows for quick, smooth movements in game. Hard pads are easier to clean than that of cloth pads and for games that rely on quick snappy movement a hard pad can make you excel.

  2. Soft pads/Cloth pads - Cloth pads are probably the most common out of the three and used by many different types of gamers. Cloth pads come with a couple variants:

    Control Pad Razer

                                                                                                                                               Razer Goliathus Large Control

    a)
Control - Control pads have a more course or grainy feel giving you more control over your mouse movement. This can come in handy when playing a precision based FPS game and you need to make sure that your aim is on point all the time. Some people dislike the feeling of the control pad as it can get irritating on your skin if you are swiping from left to right consistently.

    Speed Pad Razer Gigantus
                                                                                                               Razer Gigantus Speed Pad

    b)
Speed - A speed pad has a soft, smooth fabric surface for your mouse and has the same rubber under belly so it doesn't slip and slide around your desk. Speed pads offer the same incredible tracking and precision that a hard pad or a control pad can offer but with a little less resistance when swiping your mouse around quickly. In terms of comfort the soft fabric from the speed pads offer a little more comfort for those long gaming sessions.

    Zowie Hybrid Pad
                                                                                                                           Zowie Gear GTF-X Large

    c)
Hybrid Pads - It might sound confusing at first but simply put, a hybrid pad has a mixture of plastic and fabric intertwined together to give the benefit of speed and control over your mouse. An example of these mouse pads would be the Zowie Gear GTF-X mouse pad.

Many people ask the question: Which mouse pad is the best? Unfortunately there is no correct answer here. It all comes down to personal preference and what feels more comfortable to you. Some people like the quickness of the hard pad and others like the balance of speed and accuracy from the fabric pads. Most people go for the fabric pad as this is a more balanced feel when gaming but it will all come down to personal preference and what you enjoy using most. It can also be argued that depending on what game you play you should have a quality mouse pad to go hand in hand with that game. CS:GO for example relies on fast accurate movements with your mouse in order to hit head-shots and spin around on unsuspecting enemies. Pros and other enthusiasts would recommend a large mouse pad for an FPS game such as CS:GO as a large percentage of people play with a low sensitivity and your hand will need the real estate of the large mouse pad in order to move around efficiently in game. There are exceptions however, people playing with above average sensitivity or feeling more comfortable on the harder mouse pads.

So why should you be paying that much for a gaming mouse pad? The first and maybe the most important point is that when things are built for gaming, they are built to last. To handle all the bumps and bruises over the years. Ensuring the longevity of a product so that you can use it for years and years to come without the worry of the fabric fraying. The materials used in gaming products are exceptionally high quality, giving you the best experience and the best chance in game. The last thing you need is to have any distractions in game when you are trying to defeat your enemies.

With technology moving forward at a drastic rate you can now get a mouse pad that will actively charge your wireless gaming mouse while you're playing. Never have to worry about cords getting in your way and never worry about your mouse dying in that crucial clutch moment.
