Hall effect thumbsticks read position with a magnetic sensor instead of a physical carbon track, so nothing rubs and nothing wears out. That removes the single most common failure on a gaming controller: stick drift, where the camera creeps or the character walks on its own long after you let go.

Traditional potentiometer sticks degrade through use. The carbon film wears, the readings get noisy, and the controller starts registering movement that is not there. A magnetic sensor never touches anything, so the same accuracy on day one is there years later.
