How to Choose RAM
The right memory comes down to your platform, how much you need, and the speed your system supports. Use the guide below to choose.
Your motherboard and CPU decide. Current AM5 and LGA 1851 builds use DDR5; older AM4 and LGA 1700 systems use DDR4. They're not cross-compatible, so check your platform before buying.
16GB is the comfortable minimum for gaming; 32GB is the sweet spot for gaming plus streaming or multitasking; 64GB+ suits heavy content creation. Buy a matched kit rather than mixing single sticks.
Faster RAM and tighter timings help performance, especially on Ryzen. Enable the EXPO (AMD) or XMP (Intel) profile in BIOS to run the rated speed — without it, RAM defaults to slower speeds.
Install RAM in matched pairs to enable dual-channel mode, which noticeably improves performance over a single stick. Use the motherboard's recommended slots (usually slots 2 and 4).
Check your motherboard's supported speeds and capacity, and buy a single matched kit for guaranteed compatibility. Mixing different kits can cause instability or lower speeds.
