Does AMD's machine-learning upscaling run on every Radeon card?

No. The machine-learning version of FidelityFX Super Resolution runs on the RDNA 4 hardware in the RX 9000 series, while earlier cards fall back to the previous shader-based version. It is also enabled per game rather than by a single driver switch, so check the supported-title list for the games you actually play.

What separates the 8GB and 16GB versions of the same card?

Only the memory. The graphics processor, clock speeds and bus width are identical, so at 1080p the two behave alike. The 16GB version pulls away wherever memory runs short: 1440p with high texture settings, ray tracing switched on, heavily modded installs, and video timelines with several layers.

How good is Radeon ray tracing now?

Considerably better than it was two generations ago. The current cards add a third-generation ray accelerator and a machine-learning denoiser that cleans reflections and lighting from fewer rays. In the heaviest path-traced showcase titles the top NVIDIA cards still lead, which is worth saying plainly, but ordinary ray-traced shadows and reflections are comfortably playable.

Do I need a FreeSync monitor specifically?

No. These cards drive variable refresh through the Adaptive-Sync standard, which covers FreeSync panels and most screens marketed as G-Sync Compatible. What matters is the refresh window the panel supports and whether it handles frame doubling at the bottom of that window.

Can I stream and record without a capture card?

Yes. The media engine encodes H.264, HEVC and AV1 in hardware, so recording software or the driver's own capture tool can save gameplay with little effect on frame rate. AV1 holds the cleanest picture at a given bitrate on the platforms that accept it.

Is there a real benefit to pairing Radeon graphics with a Ryzen processor?

Not any more. Smart Access Memory was the original argument for keeping both halves in the family, and the underlying Resizable BAR feature is now standard across processor and card vendors. Choose the processor on its own merits and enable the feature in BIOS whichever brand you land on.

What power connectors does a Radeon build need?

Most current Radeon cards take conventional eight-pin PCIe connectors rather than the 12-pin plug used elsewhere, so a supply with two spare cables usually fits without adapters. Board power runs to roughly 300W at the top of the range and about half that in the mid-range; count the connectors listed on the card itself before ordering.

Desktops built around Radeon RX graphics

A Radeon desktop puts the RX card at the centre of the decision and picks everything else around it. The current architecture brings a reworked ray-tracing block, machine-learning upscaling on the newest cards, hardware AV1 encoding for capture, and 16GB of memory across the tiers aimed at 1440p and above.

Choosing a Radeon-Powered Gaming PC

Radeon cards are graded by the resolution and refresh rate they are built to hold rather than by one headline figure. The upper tier drives 1440p at high refresh and reaches 4K with upscaling; the mid-range covers 1080p comfortably and 1440p with settings judged rather than maxed.

There is little point in a card rendering 200 frames for a 75Hz screen, and none in a 1440p panel fed by a card built for 1080p. Note the resolution, the refresh ceiling and the variable-refresh window printed in the monitor's manual, then buy to those three numbers.

Partner cards in the upper Radeon tiers run past 300mm long and occupy two and a half to three slots. Measure from the drive cage to the rear of the case before ordering, and check whether a thick cooler blocks the expansion slot below it, which matters if a capture or sound card is going in.

Adrenalin puts tuning, recording and per-game profiles in one panel. HYPR-RX switches the supported performance and latency features on together instead of one at a time, and the anti-lag feature applies per title rather than universally. Updates land roughly monthly, and a clean install is worth doing when moving across from another brand.

Editing, colour grading and encoding run well, and the media engine takes the export load off the processor. Renderers deserve a check first, though: several 3D and AI toolchains are still written against CUDA and either run slower here or need a separate build. Look up the specific application rather than assuming parity.

The card takes the largest share. A current six or eight-core processor keeps any Radeon fed at 1440p, and what is saved there buys either the next card tier or a second NVMe drive. The power supply is the one component not to economise on, since the top cards pull close to 300W under sustained load.

Two details settle most of these purchases: how much memory the card carries, and whether it belongs to the generation that runs AMD's machine-learning upscaler. Everything below follows from those.
