What is a Gen 5 NVMe SSD?

A Gen 5 NVMe SSD is a solid-state drive that uses the PCIe 5.0 interface in an M.2 slot, delivering sequential reads above 14,000 MB/s, roughly double PCIe 4.0. It suits gamers and creators who move large files and want the fastest storage available in a standard M.2 form factor.

How much faster is Gen 5 than Gen 4 and SATA?

Gen 5 roughly doubles Gen 4 bandwidth, with top drives reading near 14,800 MB/s versus about 7,000 MB/s on Gen 4. Against a SATA SSD (around 550 MB/s) that is roughly 25x the sequential throughput. The gap is largest for big sequential transfers; everyday app loading feels similar between Gen 5 and a good Gen 4 drive.

Is a Gen 5 NVMe SSD compatible with my motherboard?

You need an M.2 slot wired for PCIe 5.0, found on current Intel and AMD AM5 boards, usually the primary CPU-connected slot. A Gen 5 drive still works in PCIe 4.0 or 3.0 slots but runs at that slot's slower speed. Check your motherboard manual to confirm which M.2 slot supports Gen 5.

Do Gen 5 SSDs need a heatsink?

Yes. Gen 5 controllers run hot and will thermal-throttle without cooling, reducing sustained speeds. Use your motherboard's M.2 heatsink or choose a drive that ships with its own heatsink or fan. This keeps performance consistent during long writes such as video exports or large game installs.

Which Gen 5 NVMe SSD brands does Evetech stock?

Evetech carries Gen 5 SSDs from trusted brands including Samsung, WD_BLACK, Crucial and Sabrent, built on proven controllers with high endurance and multi-year warranties. All come with local South African warranty support. Exact models, capacities and prices are shown on the product cards above.

What capacity Gen 5 SSD should I choose?

Pick 1TB for a Windows and games drive, 2TB for creators and larger libraries, or 4TB for heavy video and archive work. Larger drives often sustain higher write speeds, so sizing up can help performance as well as space. Match the capacity to your workload rather than buying the smallest option.

PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSDs deliver ultra-fast transfer speeds for demanding gaming, content creation, and large-file workloads. With sequential reads exceeding 14,000MB/s on selected drives, they offer exceptional performance for high-end systems, with proper M.2 cooling recommended. ⚡💾

How to Choose a Gen 5 NVMe SSD

Gen 5 (PCIe 5.0) NVMe SSDs are the fastest consumer drives you can fit in an M.2 slot, with top models reading at 14,800 to 14,900 MB/s and writing above 13,000 MB/s. The real-world win is biggest for large sequential transfers such as 4K and 8K video, RAW photo libraries, 3D scenes and game asset streaming, rather than everyday app loading, where a good Gen 4 drive already feels instant.

For pure gaming and general use, a fast Gen 4 drive already loads games and Windows quickly, so the jump to Gen 5 brings modest gains. Gen 5 earns its premium if you move large files often, like 4K/8K video editing, RAW photography, 3D rendering or big compiles. If your workload is sequential and heavy, the extra bandwidth is real; if not, spend the difference on more capacity.

You need an M.2 slot wired for PCIe 5.0, common on current Intel and AMD AM5 boards, usually the primary CPU-connected slot. A Gen 5 drive still runs in a PCIe 4.0 or 3.0 slot, but it drops to that slot's slower speed. Check your board manual for which M.2 slot carries Gen 5 lanes before buying.

The high-speed controllers in Gen 5 drives generate real heat, and without a heatsink they throttle to protect themselves, cutting sustained speeds. Many motherboards include an M.2 heatsink, and some drives ship with their own passive or active cooler. Fit one of these, because running a bare Gen 5 drive under heavy load leads to slowdowns.

1TB suits a Windows drive plus a core game library, while 2TB is the sweet spot for creators and larger Steam collections. 4TB makes sense for big video and archive workflows. Larger drives also tend to sustain higher write speeds, so if your budget allows, size up rather than adding a second small drive later.

Evetech stocks Gen 5 drives from established names such as Samsung, WD_BLACK, Crucial and Sabrent, built on proven controllers with multi-year warranties and high endurance (TBW) ratings. Check the TBW figure and warranty length for the capacity you want, and favour TLC NAND for consistent sustained performance.

To choose well, confirm your motherboard has a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, plan for cooling, and match capacity to your workload. TLC NAND holds sustained speeds better than QLC, and a drive with a built-in heatsink or fan avoids thermal throttling under long writes.
