How to Choose a Motherboard

The socket is not negotiable. A processor fits one socket and no other, so pick the CPU first and let it narrow the board list for you. After that the chipset decides how much you can expand and overclock.

The socket is a physical match between processor and board, and getting it wrong means the parts cannot connect at all. The chipset then decides overclocking support, how many fast storage slots you get and how many USB ports come off the board. Two boards with the same socket can differ enormously on chipset.

One is enough for most builds, two is comfortable if you want a separate drive for games, and beyond that you are usually paying for capability you will not use. Watch for slots that share bandwidth with the graphics card slot, because populating them can drop your card to fewer lanes.

The board sets which memory generation you can use, the maximum capacity and the speeds it will run reliably. Buying memory faster than the board supports means it simply runs slower. Check the supported speed list before pairing a kit.

The voltage regulation on a board determines how well it feeds a hungry processor under sustained load. Entry boards are fine for mid-range chips but can throttle a high core count part during long workloads. If you are buying near the top of a socket range, do not pair it with the cheapest board on that socket.

Front panel ports come from your case, but everything on the rear input panel is fixed at purchase. Count the USB ports you need, check whether you want onboard wireless, and confirm the video outputs if you plan to run without a graphics card.

Form factor decides whether it fits. ATX is the full size, Micro-ATX is shorter, and Mini-ITX is the small square one. Check your case supports the size before you order, because a board that is too large simply will not mount.
