Count your ports first. A router usually offers four, and a switch adds more without needing configuration. If you are only adding a console and a desktop, a small unmanaged switch is all that is required.
Cable category matters less than people expect. For gigabit speeds over normal household distances, a good quality cable of the common categories performs identically. Buy for build quality and the right length rather than the highest number.
