Start with the platform. A controller that is native to your system connects without fuss, while one designed for a different platform may need a wrapper or driver and can lose features like rumble along the way.
Then decide wired or wireless. Wired is lighter on latency and never needs charging, while wireless is more comfortable on a couch. For competitive play the difference is small on a good wireless connection, but it is not zero.
