What is included in an upgrade kit?

A processor, a matched motherboard and, on most bundles, the memory to go with them. Coolers, storage and graphics cards are normally listed separately. Read the bundle contents on the individual kit rather than assuming a cooler is in the box, because that assumption is the usual reason a build stalls halfway.

How many cores does a desktop Core Ultra 5 have?

The Core Ultra 5 245K is a fourteen-core chip: six Lion Cove performance cores and eight Skymont efficient cores, boosting to 5.2GHz. The 2026 refresh version, the Core Ultra 5 250K Plus, adds four further efficient cores for eighteen in total.

Do these processors still use hyper-threading?

No. Intel removed simultaneous multithreading on this desktop generation, so the thread count equals the core count. The extra throughput comes from adding more efficient cores instead of running two threads on each performance core, which also keeps temperatures lower under mixed loads.

Which 800-series chipset should the kit's motherboard use?

Z890 if you want memory overclocking and the most connectivity, B860 for a mainstream build that will not be tuned, and H810 only for a basic office machine. All three take the same processors, so the chipset is about the features around the chip rather than how fast it runs.

Will my Windows licence survive the motherboard swap?

A retail licence can be reactivated on new hardware by signing in with the Microsoft account it was linked to and using the activation troubleshooter. An OEM licence that came pre-installed on a branded machine is tied to that original motherboard and generally will not move.

What cooler does a Core Ultra 5 kit need?

The 245K is specified at 125W base power with a 159W maximum turbo. A competent dual-tower air cooler or a 240mm all-in-one liquid cooler handles that comfortably in a case with front intake and rear exhaust. There is no need to buy the largest cooler on the shelf for this tier.

Does the platform give me PCIe 5.0 for both a graphics card and an SSD?

Yes. The processor feeds PCIe 5.0 lanes to the primary graphics slot, and 800-series boards route one M.2 slot directly to the processor at Gen 5 speeds. An existing Gen 4 drive works perfectly well in that slot, it simply runs at its own rated speed.

Should I wait for Intel's next desktop socket instead?

Intel's next desktop generation moves to the LGA1954 socket and has slipped beyond 2026, so it is not something you can buy yet. If your current machine is holding you up today, LGA1851 is the platform actually on the shelf. If it is coping fine, there is no cost to waiting.

Processor, Motherboard and Memory in One Move

Moving to a desktop Core Ultra 5 means a new socket, a new chipset and DDR5. A kit puts those three parts together as one purchase so the processor, the board and the memory are known to work with each other before the box is opened.

What an Intel Core Ultra 5 Upgrade Kit Actually Replaces

A desktop Core Ultra 5 sits in the LGA1851 socket on an Intel 800-series board. That socket is not the one Intel used for the previous three generations, which is the reason these are sold as bundles rather than as a bare processor. Buy the chip on its own and it will not fit anything you already own.

There is no way to fit a Core Ultra 5 into an LGA1700 motherboard. The pin count and the electrical layout changed, and the chipset generation changed with them. Anyone quoting a processor-only price for this upgrade has left out the most expensive half of it.

Intel ended dual-standard boards with this platform. Every 800-series motherboard is DDR5 only, so memory from an older build stays behind. The March 2026 refresh parts run DDR5-7200 as their native speed and add support for four-rank CUDIMM modules on selected boards, which allows large capacities in only two slots.

The mounting hole spacing and socket dimensions are unchanged from LGA1700, so backplates and brackets from that generation line up correctly. Several cooler manufacturers responded by publishing compatibility lists rather than releasing new mounting kits. Confirm your specific model against the maker's list before you commit.

ATX and micro-ATX boards drop into the same case mounting points, the 24-pin and EPS power connectors are unchanged, and your graphics card and NVMe drives simply move over. Count the M.2 slots on the new board first if you are carrying across more than two drives.

The newer 200S Plus processors need a UEFI update on some 800-series boards before the system will start. Every manufacturer publishes a CPU support list showing the minimum firmware version per chip, and it is worth reading that page before choosing a specific board and processor combination.

The upside is that the rest of the machine mostly carries over. Your case, power supply, graphics card and NVMe drives move across untouched, and in most instances so does the cooler. Working out what transfers and what does not is the whole job of planning this upgrade, so start with the list below.
