How to Choose an Action Figure
Whether you're buying a first figure or adding to a shelf, the same factors decide whether you'll be happy with it: licensing, scale, articulation, condition and display. The points below cover what to look for so the figure matches how you want to enjoy it.
Officially licensed figures are produced under agreement with the rights holder, which usually means accurate likeness, consistent quality and better long-term value. Unlicensed or bootleg figures can look similar in photos but often differ in paint, materials and proportions. For display pieces you'll keep, licensed figures are the safer buy.
Scale describes the figure's size relative to the real character — a 1/6 figure is larger and more detailed, while 1/12 is a compact, shelf-friendly size. Larger scales show more detail and accessories but take more space and cost more. Pick a scale that fits your display space and how close you'll view it.
Articulated figures have movable joints so you can pose them in action or swap accessories — great if you like to restyle a display. Statues are fixed in a single sculpted pose, usually with finer detail and a more premium finish. Choose articulation if you want to interact with the figure, a statue if you want a centrepiece.
Some collectors keep figures sealed in original packaging to preserve condition and resale value; others open them to display and pose. There's no wrong answer — it depends on whether you collect to display or to hold value. If condition matters to you, store figures out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.
Keep figures out of direct sunlight to stop colours fading, and dust them gently with a soft brush. A glass cabinet protects detailed pieces from dust and knocks while still showing them off. For poseable figures, return joints to a neutral position when not displayed to avoid long-term stress on the plastic.
