Prize Figures vs Scale Figures — What to Know
Prize figures trade exclusivity for price: they are produced in large numbers, so they cost less than scale figures and aren't sold as rare investments. Buy them for the character and the look on your shelf, not as something that will appreciate. The notes below cover what to expect before you order.
It's a figure originally made to be won in Japanese arcade crane games or prize lotteries, now sold directly to collectors. They are produced in large quantities by labels like SEGA and Banpresto, which keeps prices low. Quality is solid for the price, but they aren't limited editions.
Choose a prize figure for affordability and to fill out a collection with characters you like. Choose a scale figure when you want a defined scale (such as 1/7), larger size and finer sculpt and paint. Prize figures are the value option; scale figures are the showpiece option.
Most are PVC with painted detail, sometimes with ABS parts for thinner pieces like weapons or stands. PVC holds detail well and is durable for display. Keep them out of direct sunlight to avoid fading and out of heat to avoid warping.
They usually arrive in their original retail box and need little or no assembly — typically just sitting the figure on its base. Keep the box if you want to store or move the figure safely. There's no certificate of authenticity, as these are open production runs.
Display them away from direct sunlight and heat, which can fade paint or soften PVC over time. A glass cabinet keeps dust off and protects the finish. Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth rather than cleaning chemicals.
