How to Choose a Wireless Speaker
Start with where you'll use it most — that decides the size, loudness, battery life and whether you need water resistance. Then check it pairs easily with your devices. The guide below covers the factors that separate a good buy from a frustrating one.
Match the speaker to the space. A small unit fills a desk, bedroom or bathroom; a medium one suits a lounge or small gathering; a larger party speaker is for outdoor braais and bigger rooms. Bigger speakers go louder and usually have stronger bass, but they're heavier to carry. Don't over-buy a party unit for desk use, or under-buy a tiny speaker for a garden.
Portable wireless speakers typically run anywhere from around ten hours to a full day on a charge, but real-world life drops at high volume and with higher-quality codecs. For power outages or a long day out, favour a model with longer rated battery life and treat the headline figure as a best-case number. Check the charging connector too — USB-C is the modern standard.
If the speaker will go near a pool, the beach, a shower or a braai, look for an IP rating. IPX7, for example, means it survives short submersion; IP67 adds full dust resistance. For indoor desk or shelf use you don't need a rating at all, so don't pay extra for one you won't use.
Bluetooth speakers all support the basic SBC codec; many add AAC (good on iPhones) or aptX (on Qualcomm/Snapdragon Android phones) for better quality and lower lag. For casual listening the difference is small. Pairing is simple: put the speaker in pairing mode and select it in your phone's Bluetooth menu — most reconnect automatically next time.
Many wireless speakers let you link two identical units for true left/right stereo, or chain several for louder whole-room sound. This needs matching models from the same brand and its app. If wider, room-filling sound matters to you, buy a model that supports pairing and consider getting two — but a single good speaker is fine for most uses.
