Size against the busiest moment of a real job, not against the figure the machine shows when the application has just opened. The peak arrives when a cached preview, a render queue and a browser full of references are all resident together, and that is the number worth measuring for a week before deciding. Leave room above it as well, because a system pinned at ninety-nine percent of capacity behaves almost as badly as one that is genuinely short.
Be equally clear about what capacity will not do. It does not raise the frame rate of a viewport that is limited by video memory, it does not shorten an export that is bound by processor or graphics throughput, and it does not rescue a project living on a drive that cannot feed it. Memory removes one specific failure. Buying more of it to fix a different problem is the most common expensive mistake on a workstation specification.
