Apple's laptop ladder now has four rungs: the MacBook Neo, the outgoing MacBook Air generation that stays on sale after a refresh, the current Air in two sizes, and the MacBook Pro. Each step up buys a specific thing rather than a vague improvement, which makes the decision easier to reason about than a price list suggests.
The trap at this end of the range is measuring only the sticker. Memory and storage are fixed at manufacture on every Apple silicon Mac, so a machine that is short on either cannot be topped up in two years. The cheapest purchase and the cheapest ownership are not always the same machine.
