Deciding on this class of machine is mostly a question of whether your day is spent waiting on something that can be divided. Rendering, meshing, batch conversion, simulation and compilation all divide well. Modelling, sketching, single-document editing and most CAD interaction do not, and those tasks lean on one or two cores running fast.
The honest trade-off is per-core speed against thread count. A mainstream 16-core desktop chip holds a higher clock on a lightly loaded core than a 64-core part does, so a machine chosen purely on core count can feel slower in the software you touch all day while finishing overnight jobs far sooner. Buyers who work both ways usually land on the 24 or 32-core parts.
