The folding-display category has thinned rather than grown. Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Fold, with a 16.3-inch panel that works in landscape, portrait, book and laptop layouts, is the model that has stayed on sale. The 17-inch effort from ASUS has aged out, and HP retired both its Spectre brand and the folding laptop that carried it. Meanwhile Lenovo has pushed at a different idea altogether with a rollable OLED panel that motors upward from about 14 inches to 16.7.
None of that makes the format a bad buy. It does mean the buyer should know exactly what the money is for, because a folding panel is not a faster laptop, a lighter one, or a cheaper one. Read the five points below before shortlisting anything.
