Work out usable space against real growth. A photo and video archive grows by whatever you shoot; a backup target grows with the number of machines pointed at it and how many versions you retain; a surveillance recorder grows at a rate you can calculate exactly from camera count, resolution and retention days. Aim to stay under about 80% occupancy, because arrays slow and fragment as they approach full, and widening one later is considerably more disruptive than fitting larger drives at the start.
Market conditions have made that planning more consequential than it used to be. Consumer and NAS drive prices have risen steeply since late 2025 as manufacturers committed the bulk of their output to data-centre buyers, and lead times on the largest models stretched from weeks into months. Ordering the drives you need in one go, instead of assuming you can top up cheaply next year, is the safer plan while that lasts.
