A development desktop is judged on how much it holds open at once. A container runtime, a local database, an editor indexing a large repository and thirty browser tabs are all resident together, and the machine that feels quick is the one that never has to page any of them out. Processor choice follows from what you build. Compilation splits neatly across cores, linking largely does not, and every parallel job wants memory of its own, so cores and capacity have to be bought together.
