An AMOLED panel lights each pixel individually, so black pixels are genuinely switched off rather than backlit grey. On a watch that means deeper contrast, more saturated watch faces, and text that stays readable in direct South African sun.

It also changes battery behaviour. Because dark pixels use no power, a mostly-black watch face costs far less than a bright one, which is why always-on displays are practical on AMOLED and awkward on TFT.

The alternative is TFT LCD, which is cheaper and often paired with longer quoted battery life. AMOLED is the better screen; TFT is the better value if screen quality is not your priority.
