The ViewSonic SP3 is a straightforward business projector for schools and offices, showing SVGA resolution at 800 x 600 pixels, which suits slides, charts and simple video on a large screen. At 4800 ANSI lumens it stays readable with the room lights on, so nobody has to close the blinds to run a meeting, and SuperColor Technology keeps the colours natural and balanced.

Lamp modes let you trade brightness for lamp hours. With Power Saving on and no signal present, the SP3 drops to Eco Mode after five idle minutes. After 20 minutes without an input signal it enters SuperEco Mode and dims the projected image to 70 percent, which extends lamp life to 15,000 hours on average.

Projectors get left running in classrooms and meeting rooms more often than anyone admits. The sleep timer lets you set a period of inactivity after which the projector puts itself into sleep mode, so a room that empties at the end of a lesson does not leave the lamp burning for the rest of the afternoon.

If no signal is detected at all, the SP3 powers itself off rather than idling. That is a separate behaviour from the sleep timer, and it is the one that conserves both energy and lamp life when a laptop is unplugged and carried out of the room without anyone touching the projector.

A 22,000:1 high contrast ratio works alongside the projector's brightness to hold image quality in any environment, including rooms with high ambient light. Contrast is what separates text from background when sunlight is falling across the screen, which is why it matters as much as the lumen figure in a daytime classroom.

ViewSonic's proprietary SuperColor Technology displays a wide range of visible colour, so images look realistic and accurate in bright and dark environments without trading away image quality. On a business projector that mostly shows charts and branded slides, accurate colour is what keeps a logo or a graph legend looking the way it was designed.

Five preset modes cover the common cases. Brightest Mode is for rooms needing maximum brightness, Presentation Mode combines high brightness and contrast for brightly lit rooms, Standard Mode gives enhanced colour similar to a PC or notebook, Photo Mode delivers natural colour for general viewing, and Movie Mode adds saturated colour for dark rooms.

The SP3's HDMI port projects 3D content straight from 3D Blu-Ray players and other HDMI-enabled devices including laptops, tablets and media players. Because the 3D handling sits on the projector side of the connection, the source device does not need anything beyond a standard HDMI output to feed it.

Two settings get the projector running without pressing anything. Direct Power On starts the SP3 as soon as the power cord is connected, and Signal Power On brings it up automatically when a VGA cable connection is detected. In a room used by different people every hour, that removes the step most often forgotten.

The SP3 can be assigned one of eight different remote control codes, so multiple projectors in the same venue can be selected, configured and operated from a single remote. Codes have to be set on both the projector and the remote, and once they are, a lecture theatre with several units stops being a guessing game.

Vertical keystone correction squares up a distorted image when the projector cannot sit level with the screen. That flexibility is what makes installation practical in rooms where the mounting point is fixed, since the geometry can be corrected in software instead of by physically repositioning the unit or the screen.

The Presentation Timer is an on-screen timer built into the projector rather than a separate app. Once your specified time limit is reached the projector signals with a beep, which keeps a session running to schedule without the presenter checking a phone or relying on someone at the back of the room to signal.

The SP3's Blank Timer hides the projected image at chosen points in a presentation, moving the room's attention from the screen back to the presenter. It doubles as a break reminder, which is useful in longer sessions where the natural stopping points are easy to talk straight past.

On the outside the SP3 carries a keypad and LED indicator for local control, a lamp cover for servicing, a security lock, and zoom and focus adjustment beside the projection lens. A front IR receiver picks up the remote from in front of the unit, which matters when it is ceiling mounted at the back of a room.

The rear panel carries audio in and out, HDMI, dual VGA inputs with a VGA out, mini USB, a video input, a Kensington lock slot and RS232. Dual VGA plus VGA out is the combination that lets a room feed two sources and pass the signal on, while RS232 covers control from an integrated AV system.
