What does an APC UPS actually do during a power outage in South Africa?

It switches your connected gear to battery within milliseconds when mains power drops, so your PC, router or NAS keeps running instead of hard-resetting. That protects unsaved work and hardware from the abrupt cut and the surge when power returns. A UPS is built for instant cutover and surge protection, not multi-hour load shedding; for that you add an inverter or battery bank.

What is the difference between APC Back-UPS, Back-UPS Pro and Smart-UPS?

Back-UPS models are entry-level standby and line-interactive units for home PCs, routers and consoles. Back-UPS Pro adds more capacity and pure sine wave output. Smart-UPS is the line-interactive business range with pure sine wave, AVR and network monitoring for servers and racks, while Smart-UPS On-Line (SRT) uses double-conversion for mission-critical loads.

Do I need a pure sine wave UPS for a gaming PC?

If your PC uses an active-PFC power supply - most modern gaming and workstation PSUs do - a pure sine wave UPS is the safe choice, so choose Back-UPS Pro or Smart-UPS. Basic office PCs, routers and LED lighting run fine on the simulated sine wave of entry Back-UPS models.

Are APC UPS units made for South Africa's 230V/50Hz power?

Yes. APC units sold locally are configured for 230V/50Hz and include surge protection, and most add Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) to smooth the voltage dips and spikes common on the SA grid. Buying locally also means genuine warranty support and access to replacement batteries.

Can an APC UPS keep my router and fibre ONT online during load shedding?

Yes. Networking gear draws little power, so even a compact Back-UPS can keep a fibre ONT and Wi-Fi router running for a useful stretch. Exact runtime depends on the model, battery age and how many devices you connect; lighter loads run longer. For all-day coverage, pair the UPS with a dedicated router battery or inverter.

How APC UPS Systems Keep Your Gear Running in South Africa

Q: How do I choose the right APC UPS size in VA and watts?

Add up the wattage of everything you will plug in - PC, monitor, router, NAS - and pick a UPS whose watt rating clears that total with roughly 30% headroom. A UPS's watt capacity is usually about 60-70% of its VA rating, so a 1500VA unit typically handles around 900W. More headroom also means longer runtime.

Q: Line-interactive vs online double-conversion APC UPS - which should I buy?

Line-interactive units (most Back-UPS and Smart-UPS) correct minor voltage sags with AVR and switch to battery in a few milliseconds - ideal for home offices, PCs and small servers. Online double-conversion (Smart-UPS On-Line / SRT) continuously rebuilds the waveform for zero transfer time and full isolation, suited to servers and sensitive equipment.

An APC UPS gives your PC, router, NAS or POS system instant battery cutover the moment mains power drops, so nothing reboots and no work is lost. Back-UPS and Back-UPS Pro units suit home offices and desktops, while Smart-UPS and Smart-UPS On-Line handle servers, network racks and sensitive active-PFC power supplies.

Match the UPS to your load in watts, then pick a battery big enough for a safe shutdown or a short outage. A UPS covers instant cutover and surge protection during South Africa's grid dips and unplanned outages; for multi-hour load shedding you pair it with an inverter or battery system. Every APC unit at Evetech ships with local warranty support.

How to Choose an APC UPS in South Africa

Choosing an APC UPS comes down to three things: the watt rating of everything you plug in, the runtime you need, and the output waveform. Add up the power draw of your PC, monitor, router and NAS, then choose a UPS whose watt capacity clears that total with headroom to spare.

Add up the wattage of every device you will connect and choose a UPS whose watt rating clears that total with roughly 30% headroom. A UPS's watt capacity is usually about 60-70% of its VA figure, so a 1500VA unit typically handles around 900W. Extra headroom also buys you longer runtime.

Line-interactive units (most Back-UPS and Smart-UPS) trim minor voltage sags with AVR and switch to battery in a few milliseconds, which suits home offices, PCs and small servers. Online double-conversion models (Smart-UPS On-Line / SRT) continuously rebuild the waveform for zero transfer time and full isolation from mains problems, for mission-critical loads.

Yes. Networking gear draws very little power, so even a compact Back-UPS can keep a fibre ONT and Wi-Fi router running. Actual runtime depends on the model, battery age and how many devices you connect; lighter loads run longer. For all-day coverage, add a dedicated router battery or inverter.

If your PC uses an active-PFC power supply - most modern gaming and workstation PSUs do - a pure sine wave UPS is the safe choice, so pick Back-UPS Pro or Smart-UPS. Basic office PCs, routers, modems and LED lighting run fine on the simulated sine wave of entry Back-UPS models.

Yes. UPS batteries are consumable and typically last around 3-5 years depending on heat and cycling. APC uses genuine Replacement Battery Cartridges (RBC), and Smart-UPS models support hot-swappable modules so you can change batteries without downtime. Evetech stocks APC units with local warranty support.

Waveform matters for modern gear. Entry Back-UPS models output a stepped, simulated sine wave that is fine for basic PCs and networking, while active-PFC PC power supplies and servers run best on the pure sine wave output of Back-UPS Pro and Smart-UPS units. A UPS handles instant cutover and surge protection; for long load-shedding slots you add an inverter or battery bank.
