A good PC controller makes racing, platformers, fighting games and couch co-op far easier than mouse and keyboard. The three families that matter are Xbox Wireless (native XInput, plug-and-play on Windows and Steam), Sony DualSense (adaptive triggers and haptics in supported games) and 8BitDo (multi-platform switching and drift-resistant sticks).

Pick by how you play. Xbox is the safest all-rounder because Windows is built around XInput, so most PC games detect it with zero setup. DualSense adds immersion in titles that support its haptics, but needs Steam Input or a driver for full features. For competitive input, wired or 2.4GHz dongles beat Bluetooth on latency, and Hall-effect or TMR sticks resist the stick drift that kills cheaper pads.
