Are handheld gaming PCs powerful enough for AAA games?

Yes, within limits. Current handhelds like the ROG Xbox Ally X and Lenovo Legion Go 2 run many AAA titles at 720p to 1080p with medium settings and playable frame rates, thanks to AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme chips with RDNA 3.5 graphics. The Steam Deck OLED handles the same games at lower settings while lasting longer on battery. For the most demanding titles you will still turn some settings down.

Which handheld has the best battery life?

SteamOS devices with efficient chips tend to lead. The Steam Deck OLED often reaches four hours or more in lighter games because SteamOS and its APU are power-efficient. High-performance Windows handhelds like the ROG Xbox Ally X and MSI Claw 8 AI+ can drop under three hours in turbo mode, though larger batteries (the Ally X carries an 80Wh pack) help. Lowering the TDP extends runtime on any of them.

Should I get a SteamOS or a Windows handheld?

SteamOS handhelds like the Steam Deck OLED and the SteamOS Legion Go S are simpler, more battery-efficient and built for controller use. Windows 11 handhelds like the ROG Xbox Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go 2 and MSI Claw give you every PC storefront, Xbox Game Pass and full modding, at the cost of a less handheld-friendly desktop. Choose SteamOS for ease and efficiency, Windows for maximum game compatibility.

Can handheld gaming PCs play Steam, Epic and Game Pass games?

Yes. Windows handhelds run Steam, Epic Games, GOG, the Xbox app and Game Pass directly. SteamOS devices run Steam natively and play a large share of the library through Proton; check ProtonDB for a specific title's compatibility rating before you rely on it. Xbox Game Pass cloud streaming also works on both once you are signed in.

What CPU, RAM and storage should I look for?

For current handhelds, aim for an AMD Ryzen Z2 or Z2 Extreme, or an Intel Core Ultra chip, paired with at least 16GB of RAM (memory is shared with the graphics, so more helps). Storage is a fast NVMe SSD, ideally 512GB or larger, and many models take a microSD card to expand it. More RAM and faster storage improve load times and multitasking.

Can I connect a handheld to a monitor or dock?

Yes. Most handhelds output video over USB-C to a monitor or TV, so you can play on a big screen with a controller, keyboard and mouse. Models with USB4 or Thunderbolt, and some ROG Ally variants, can drive higher-bandwidth docks and in some cases an external GPU. Check the device's port bandwidth and power delivery before buying accessories.

How many hours of gaming should I expect on the go?

Plan for roughly two to five hours depending on the device, the game and your power setting. Lighter indie and esports titles on a low-TDP SteamOS handheld sit at the top of that range; demanding AAA games in turbo mode on a Windows handheld sit at the bottom. A power bank with enough wattage can recharge most handhelds while you play.

Handheld gaming PCs including Steam Deck, ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go

Handheld Gaming PCs for Portable Play

A handheld gaming PC runs your full Steam, Epic and Game Pass library in your hands, no console lock-in. The line-up we stock spans SteamOS devices like the Steam Deck OLED and the Lenovo Legion Go S, and Windows 11 handhelds like the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go 2 and MSI Claw 8 AI+. Choose by chip, screen, battery and operating system to match how and where you play.

How to Choose a Handheld Gaming PC

Handheld gaming PCs put a full Windows or SteamOS gaming machine into a controller-shaped body, so you can play the same games you own on desktop, away from your desk. The current field runs from the value-focused Steam Deck OLED to premium 8-inch machines like the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go 2 and MSI Claw 8 AI+.

The processor sets your frame-rate ceiling. Most current handhelds use an AMD Ryzen Z2 or Z2 Extreme with RDNA 3.5 graphics, as in the ROG Xbox Ally X and Lenovo Legion Go 2, which balance performance and battery well at 720p to 1080p. The MSI Claw 8 AI+ runs an Intel Core Ultra chip with strong multi-core throughput and an NPU. The Steam Deck OLED uses an efficient custom AMD APU that trades peak power for excellent battery life.

Screens range from about 7 to 8.8 inches. OLED panels, like the Steam Deck OLED and Legion Go 2, give deeper blacks and higher brightness than LCD. Bigger 8-inch-plus screens are more immersive but add weight and drain the battery faster. Higher refresh rates (120Hz and up) with VRR keep motion smooth, though hitting those frame rates on demanding titles usually means turning settings down.

Battery life depends on the power draw (TDP) you set and how hard the game pushes the chip. Lower-TDP SteamOS devices like the Steam Deck OLED often stretch to four hours or more in lighter titles, while high-power Windows handhelds in turbo mode can drop under three hours on demanding games. A larger battery, like the 80Wh pack in the ROG Xbox Ally X, buys back runtime at the cost of weight.

SteamOS (Steam Deck, Legion Go S SteamOS edition) is built for controller-first handheld use: fast sleep and resume, efficient battery use, and a clean games-focused interface. Windows 11 handhelds like the ROG Xbox Ally X and MSI Claw open up every PC storefront, Game Pass and modding, but the desktop is less comfortable on a small touchscreen. Pick SteamOS for simplicity and efficiency, Windows for maximum compatibility.

You hold these for hours, so grip shape, weight and control quality matter. Larger 8-inch devices are heavier in the hands, while the Steam Deck's shape and trackpads suit long sessions. Check for hall-effect thumbsticks (drift-resistant), full-size triggers, and enough USB-C ports for charging while docked. Some handhelds, like the Legion Go, offer detachable controllers for extra flexibility.

The right pick comes down to a few trade-offs: the chip driving frame rates, the screen you look at, how long the battery lasts, the operating system, and how the device feels in your hands over a long session. Work through the factors below to narrow it down.
