Two builds at the same total can behave very differently. One puts everything into the graphics card and stalls on a 16GB memory ceiling with a cheap drive; the other spreads too thin and ends up GPU-limited in every title. The useful mental model is a set of floors: below a certain graphics tier a resolution stops being viable, below a certain memory capacity you get stutter rather than a lower frame rate, and below a certain power-supply quality the whole thing becomes unreliable under load.
Graphics memory deserves particular attention this generation. Independent testing repeatedly shows texture-heavy releases pushing past 8GB at 1440p on high presets, and the symptom is not a graceful slowdown but frame-time spikes and texture pop-in. That makes the 16GB variants of the mainstream cards the safer buy even when the 8GB version carries the same model name and a better price.
