What changed between ATX 3.0 and ATX 3.1?

Both standards cover the transient power excursions modern graphics cards produce. ATX 3.1 tightens the requirement and pairs it with the revised 12V-2x6 connector, whose shorter sense pins cut power if the plug is not fully home. On a unit like the MAG A850GL that appears as a native colour-banded cable rather than an adapter.

Which MSI unit suits an RTX 50 series build?

Any model in the current PCIe 5.1 range will connect, since the 12V-2x6 lead is native. Size it by the card rather than the range name: an 850W unit covers a single high-tier GPU alongside a mainstream processor, while the 1000W and 1300W models exist for the top cards where both sustained draw and spikes are higher.

Do MSI power supplies work with AMD and Intel boards equally?

Yes. The 24-pin ATX and EPS 12V connectors are platform-neutral, so the same unit powers an AM5 or an LGA 1851 board without distinction. What varies is how many EPS leads a board wants - enthusiast boards often carry two eight-pin CPU sockets, so confirm the unit ships two cables.

What does MSI Center add to a MEG power supply?

The Ai series reports back over a data link and shows live input and output wattage, efficiency and internal temperature inside MSI Center. It is a diagnostic convenience rather than a performance feature, and its real value shows when you are working out whether an unexplained shutdown came from the supply or from elsewhere.

Is 80 PLUS Gold enough, or does Titanium pay for itself?

Gold is the sensible landing point for nearly every gaming build; the efficiency gap up to Titanium is a few percent and takes years of heavy use to recover in electricity. Titanium earns its place in machines that run long hours, or where lower waste heat and tighter voltage regulation matter more than the purchase price.

How much headroom should I leave above my system draw?

Aim to sit near half the unit's rating at typical gaming load. Efficiency peaks around that point on most designs, the fan stays slow, and there is room for a future graphics card without a second purchase. Running a supply close to its ceiling continuously is what shortens its life.

Do these units protect against South African mains problems?

They carry the standard internal set - over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current, over-power, over-temperature and short-circuit protection - which handles faults arising inside the PC. None of that substitutes for a UPS or surge protection at the wall, which is the relevant defence when the supply itself is unstable.

MSI Power Supplies

MAG, MPG and MEG - three tiers, one standard

MSI splits its power supplies the way it splits motherboards. MAG is Arsenal Gaming, built around stable delivery and a long warranty. MPG is Performance Gaming, adding higher efficiency grades and flat modular cabling. MEG sits at the top with Titanium-class certification and MSI Center telemetry.

The question that separates modern units is no longer efficiency alone but how they behave when a graphics card swings from idle to peak draw inside a millisecond. MSI's current GL and GS models are rated to ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1, which specifies them to ride out excursions of twice the rated total output and three times the rated GPU load without tripping protection.

MAG stands for Arsenal Gaming and covers the mainstream units, where the priority is steady delivery and long cover rather than features. MPG is Performance Gaming, with higher efficiency grades and flat modular leads. MEG is Enthusiast Gaming, where a unit such as the Ai1300P holds Titanium certification from 80 PLUS, Cybenetics and PPLP at the same time.

MSI backs several of its Gold-rated modular units with a ten-year limited warranty, which is unusual at that price point and says something about the components inside. A supply is the one part that can take other hardware with it when it fails, so cover length works as a reasonable proxy for how much the maker trusts the design.

The higher MSI units specify 105°C Japanese electrolytic capacitors throughout, not only on the primary side. Capacitor ageing is driven by heat and running hours, so a higher temperature rating directly extends the years before ripple begins to climb - which counts in a warm room with no aircon over a South African summer.

Fully modular means only the leads your build uses get attached, which frees the space behind the motherboard tray that compact chassis do not have. Check two numbers before ordering: the depth of the unit against your case's PSU bay, and whether the EPS lead is long enough to reach the top of the board in a full tower.

On the models that offer it, a zero-RPM mode holds the fan stationary under light load and spins it up on a controlled curve once the unit warms. A desktop idling or playing video is then silent from the supply, and you generally have to be gaming on a high-wattage card before it becomes audible at all.

The second practical change is the cable itself. Current units ship a native dual-colour 12V-2x6 lead rather than a fan of eight-pin adapters, so a card expecting the newer plug connects directly and the colour band tells you at a glance whether it is fully seated.
