How high should a laptop stand lift my screen?

Aim for the top of the screen to sit at or slightly below eye level when you sit upright, which usually means raising the display about 10-25 cm above the desk. This keeps your neck neutral instead of tilted down. Adjustable stands let you fine-tune the exact height for your desk and chair.

Do I still need an external keyboard with a laptop stand?

Yes. Raising the screen to eye level also raises the built-in keyboard, so typing on the laptop itself would force your arms up. Adding an external keyboard and mouse at desk height lets your screen sit high while your hands stay low - that pairing is what makes the setup ergonomic.

Will a laptop stand fit my 13 to 17 inch laptop?

Most stands are designed for laptops from roughly 11 to 17 inches, but check the platform width and rear lip against your model before buying. Product specs list supported screen sizes and the maximum weight, so confirm both - a 17-inch gaming laptop needs a wider, sturdier frame than a 13-inch ultrabook.

Does a laptop stand help with cooling?

Raising the laptop and leaving the underside open improves airflow, which helps heat escape during long or heavy sessions. Aluminium stands also conduct warmth away from the chassis. For laptops that run hot under gaming or rendering, a stand with a built-in fan adds active airflow, while a ventilated passive stand is quieter.

Which laptop stand is best for travel?

Foldable aluminium stands are the most portable - they collapse to a thin profile that slips into a laptop sleeve or backpack. Look for a lightweight design with rubberised feet and a secure lip so the laptop stays put on the move. These trade some height range for packability compared with a fixed desk riser.

How much weight can a laptop stand hold?

Many stands support around 5 kg, which comfortably covers ultrabooks and mainstream laptops. Larger and gaming laptops are heavier, so check the rated capacity and pick a rigid aluminium frame if you also plan to connect a dock or external monitor. The weight limit is listed in each product's specifications.

What is the difference between a laptop stand and a cooling pad?

A laptop stand mainly fixes ergonomics by lifting the screen toward eye level, often in aluminium with passive ventilation. A cooling pad focuses on temperature, sitting under the laptop with fans to push air across the base. Some products combine both - an adjustable aluminium stand with an integrated fan.

Ergonomic Laptop Stands & Risers

A laptop stand raises your screen so its top edge sits near eye level, which keeps your neck upright and eases the forward head-tilt that a flat laptop forces on you. Pair one with an external keyboard and mouse so your hands stay at desk height while the display rises - that combination is the core of a comfortable, ergonomic setup.

Choose between fixed risers, height- and angle-adjustable stands, foldable travel models and vertical docks that hold a closed laptop beside an external monitor. Aluminium builds add rigidity and draw heat away from the chassis, and open or ventilated frames improve airflow during long work, study or gaming sessions. Check the platform size and stated weight capacity against your laptop before buying, then order online for delivery across South Africa.

How to Choose a Laptop Stand

The right laptop stand depends on where you work, how often you move it and how warm your laptop runs. A fixed desk riser suits a permanent workstation, a multi-position adjustable stand lets you fine-tune height and tilt across different desks, and a slim foldable model travels in a laptop sleeve. Because raising the screen also raises the keyboard, plan to add an external keyboard and mouse so your posture stays neutral.

Look for a stand that lifts the screen roughly 10-25 cm so its top edge lands at or just below eye level when you sit upright. Fixed risers set one height, while adjustable stands offer several height and tilt positions - useful if you switch desks or share the stand. A small tilt of around 15-30 degrees also improves the viewing angle.

Fixed risers are stable and simple for a home desk. Adjustable stands trade a little bulk for flexible positioning. Foldable aluminium stands collapse flat for a backpack and suit commuters. Vertical docks hold a closed laptop upright to save desk space when you drive an external monitor. Pick by how much you move between locations.

Aluminium is the common choice because it is rigid for its weight and conducts heat, drawing warmth away from the laptop base. Open-frame and ventilated designs let hot air escape from the underside. For laptops that run hot under gaming or rendering loads, a stand with an active cooling fan adds airflow, while a passive aluminium frame is quieter and needs no power.

Check the platform fits your screen size, commonly 11 to 17 inches, and that the rear lip is deep enough to stop the laptop sliding. Confirm the stated weight capacity covers your machine - many stands support up to about 5 kg, which suits most ultrabooks and mainstream laptops, but heavier gaming laptops need a rated frame.

A rigid frame and non-slip pads keep the laptop steady while you type or use the touchpad. Wider bases and triangle-brace designs resist wobble, which matters if you also connect a dock, external drives or a second monitor. Rubberised contact points protect the laptop finish and prevent it slipping on a smooth desk.

Match the stand to your machine and setup below. Confirm the platform width and rear lip suit your screen size, and check the weight capacity covers your laptop - heavier gaming laptops need a sturdier frame than an ultrabook. Ventilation, material and portability then narrow the choice.
