The backrest tips back the moment I sit down. Can that be fixed?

Yes, and it needs no tools. There is a large knob under the front of the seat that sets how much force the recline takes, and chairs ship with it wound almost all the way out. Turn it clockwise a few full rotations at a time and sit down between adjustments until leaning back meets steady resistance. Most people never find that knob and conclude the chair is faulty.

My armrests move slightly when I lean on them. Is that a defect?

A small amount of play is normal where a plastic arm bolts to the seat pan through two fixings. Check both bolts are fully seated first, since one that stopped a turn short during assembly causes most of it. Movement in the pad itself while the arm stays still is a different matter and points at the pad mount rather than the frame.

Is a mesh seat as good as a mesh backrest?

Not usually at this price. A mesh back is a straightforward win for airflow because it carries little weight. A mesh seat has to hold all of it, and a budget one concentrates pressure along the frame edge under your thighs after an hour. Can I use one of these chairs on a rug or thick carpet?

Hard nylon castors are made for tiles and laminate and they dig into pile, which makes the chair feel stuck and drags the rug with it. How should I clean fabric and coated upholstery?

Not necessarily. A new chair changes the position you have been holding for months, and a fortnight of adjustment is common. Before deciding, check three things: whether the seat height matches the desk, whether you are sitting far enough back for the lumbar curve to reach you, and whether the recline is locked upright when you intended it free. If the pain is sharp rather than the ache of a new position, stop using it and take advice.
