The Promate MAGHOLD-90 mounts a phone to the edge of an in-car display rather than to the dashboard, gripping monitors between 7 and 14.6mm thick. Nothing is stuck to the dash and nothing blocks a vent, which is what makes it work in cars where a conventional mount has nowhere sensible to sit.

SecureGrip technology is built on military-grade N52 magnets, the strongest commonly specified grade, and they hold the phone with no arms clamping its edges. Promate rates the grip to keep a phone secure over rough terrain, and attaching or releasing it takes one hand and no looking away from the road.

MagSafe-enabled phones align and lock on directly with no extra parts. For handsets without built-in magnets, metal rings are supplied in the box to stick onto the phone or its case, so an Android device or an older iPhone uses exactly the same mount rather than needing a different one.

The bracket spans monitors from 7 to 14.6mm thick, which covers most factory and aftermarket in-car displays. Silicone lining on the clamping surfaces stops the metal touching the screen bezel and damps vibration, so the mount does not shake at speed and does not mark the monitor it grips.

The head rotates a full 360 degrees so the phone can be set upright for navigation or turned flat for video, and the telescoping arm extends the phone away from the monitor for a better line of sight. Adjustment does not obstruct the car's own display, which is the point of mounting there.

The holder is machined from aluminium alloy with silicone contact surfaces, measuring 75 by 82 by 149mm and weighing 175g. Metal rather than plastic is what keeps a telescoping arm rigid over years of daily use, and it also lets the mount read as part of the car interior rather than an accessory bolted on.
