Winx: Desk Mounting, Video Calls and Wireless Display

Winx builds the hardware that sits around a computer rather than inside it. The Rise arms lift screens off the desktop on a gas spring, the DO Simple webcam handles calls at Full HD without drivers, and the CAST kits put a laptop on an HDMI screen over their own wireless link.

It is a practical range aimed at home offices, boardrooms and study desks, where a properly tensioned arm and a webcam that is recognised on the first plug matter more than a badge. Match each item to hardware you already own before ordering.

Three families cover most of what a desk needs once the computer itself is sorted. Rise arms take the screen off its stand and let you set height, depth and angle independently. The DO Simple webcam covers video calls at 1080p. The CAST kits send a laptop's picture to a television or projector without touching the venue's network.

The WX-BR105 carries one screen; the WX-BR106 holds two from one mounting point, each side rated to 9kg and covering 17 to 32 inches. Two separate single arms give more freedom over where each screen sits and spread the load across the desk. A dual arm keeps the desktop tidier but concentrates everything at one clamp, which is worth thinking about on a thin or unsupported top.

The Rise arms use the 100 x 100mm hole pattern. Smaller displays often use 75 x 75mm and need an inexpensive adapter plate, and a handful of slim consumer panels have no mounting holes at all, which no arm can work around. The pattern is printed in the monitor's specification list, behind the stand.

A C-clamp grips the desk edge and needs a clear overhang with nothing screwed underneath it. A grommet mount drops a bolt through an existing cable hole and spreads the load over a wider area, which suits thinner tops. Glass desks and floating shelves are the two surfaces that catch people out, so check the top's construction rather than just its thickness.

It records 1080p at 30fps through a 67-degree field of view, which frames one person at arm's length rather than a room of people. The microphone picks up from roughly three to five metres and a physical shutter slides over the lens when you are done. There is no subject tracking, no 60fps mode and no built-in light.

The CAST Essential kit pairs a USB-C transmitter with an HDMI receiver at 1080p60 over a dedicated 5GHz link, with about 30 metres of clear line of sight. One receiver pairs with up to five transmitters, so presenters take turns without swapping cables. The laptop's USB-C port must carry DisplayPort alt mode; where it does not, the HDMI version of the transmitter does the same job.

The specifications that decide the purchase are unglamorous: the VESA pattern and mass of your monitor, the thickness and construction of your desk edge, and whether the laptop's USB-C port actually carries video. Get those three right and the rest is straightforward.
