The two sockets are not two tiers of the same thing. AM4 is architecturally finished, since nothing beyond Zen 3 was ever released for it and nothing will be, although AMD does still manufacture chips for it. AM5 is the live one, committed by AMD through 2029, with the next architecture expected on it in 2027.
What shifted is cost. DDR4 production is being wound down while demand for it persists, and through 2026 that pushed DDR4 pricing up hard enough that some capacities have traded above the DDR5 equivalent. The old assumption that a DDR4 build is automatically the cheaper build no longer holds, so price both platforms in full on the day rather than from memory.
