What is a power supply under 650W best for?

Sub-650W units (usually 450W to 600W) suit office and home PCs, home-theatre builds, and entry-to-mid-range gaming systems: a mainstream Intel Core or AMD Ryzen CPU with integrated graphics or a 50- or 60-class GPU. You get efficiency and reliability at a lower price than a higher-wattage unit you would never fully use.

How many watts do I need for my build?

Add your CPU and GPU rated power draw, roughly 100W for the rest (drives, fans, RAM and the board), then 20 to 25% headroom. A mainstream CPU plus a 60-class GPU often totals 350 to 450W, so a 550W to 600W PSU is comfortable. Higher-tier graphics cards generally need 650W or more, above this range.

Is 80+ Bronze or Gold better for a budget PSU?

80+ Bronze delivers about 82% efficiency at typical load and is a fine minimum. 80+ Gold reaches around 90%, so it runs cooler, quieter and cheaper to power. For a PC used many hours a day the Gold savings add up; for light use, Bronze is a sensible way to keep the upfront cost down.

Can a sub-650W PSU run a gaming graphics card?

Yes, for entry and mid-range cards. A 50- or 60-class GPU paired with a mainstream CPU fits comfortably within 550 to 600W. For a 70-class card or higher, or if you plan to overclock heavily, choose a 650W-plus unit with more headroom and better transient tolerance instead.

What is ATX 3.1 and the 12V-2x6 connector?

ATX 3.1 is the current PSU standard. It copes better with the rapid power spikes of modern GPUs and adds the 12V-2x6 16-pin connector, a safer, better-seating replacement for the original 12VHPWR. If your graphics card uses a 16-pin power input, a native 12V-2x6 PSU removes the need for an adapter.

Should I choose a modular power supply?

Modular and semi-modular PSUs let you fit only the cables you need, improving airflow and tidiness, which helps in compact cases. Non-modular units cost less and work just as reliably; you simply route the unused cables out of sight. In the sub-650W range, semi-modular is the usual value sweet spot.

How do I know a PSU is reliable?

Reliability lives in the internals: good capacitors, full protection circuitry (over-voltage, over-current and short-circuit), and a warranty of five years or more. Stick to established brands, match the wattage to your actual parts, and avoid unbranded units with inflated ratings. Every power supply Evetech stocks is backed by local warranty support in South Africa.

Power Supply Under 650w

Power Supplies Under 650W

Right-Sized Power for Entry and Mid-Range PCs

Power supplies rated under 650W cover the sweet spot for office PCs, home systems and entry-to-mid-range gaming builds: a mainstream Intel Core or AMD Ryzen CPU paired with integrated graphics or a 50- or 60-class GPU. In this range you are buying efficiency and reliability, not raw wattage.

How to Choose a Power Supply Under 650W

A power supply's job is to deliver clean, stable power to every component, so wattage is only half the story. Efficiency, build quality, connectors and warranty matter just as much. Units under 650W (typically 450W to 600W) are built for entry and mid-range systems, where a bigger PSU would only add cost. Sizing one correctly means matching real power draw rather than guessing high.

Add your CPU and GPU rated power, roughly 100W for drives, fans, RAM and the motherboard, then add 20 to 25% headroom. A mainstream CPU with a 60-class GPU usually lands near 350 to 450W total, so a 550W to 600W unit is comfortable. If your graphics card is 70-class or higher, step up to 650W or more instead of stretching a smaller PSU.

80+ Bronze guarantees about 82% efficiency at typical load and is fine for budget builds. 80+ Gold reaches roughly 90%, running cooler and quieter while trimming your electricity bill over the PSU's life. On a mid-range PC that stays on for hours each day, Gold tends to pay for itself. For a light-use office machine, Bronze is a sensible way to save upfront.

ATX 3.1 units handle sudden GPU power spikes more gracefully and include the newer 12V-2x6 connector, which seats more securely than the older 12VHPWR design. If your graphics card uses a 16-pin power input, a native 12V-2x6 PSU avoids adapters. For cards that still use standard 8-pin PCIe plugs, a solid ATX 2.x unit remains perfectly fine.

Modular PSUs let you connect only the cables you need, which tidies cabling and airflow, especially in small cases. Semi-modular keeps the essential cables fixed and detaches the rest, a good budget compromise. Non-modular is the cheapest and just as reliable; you simply tuck the spare cables away. In the sub-650W bracket, semi-modular is the common value pick.

Reliability comes from the internals, not the sticker wattage: quality capacitors, proper over-voltage and short-circuit protection, and a real warranty of five years or more. Buy from established brands, match the rating to your build, and avoid unbranded units that overstate their output. A failing cheap PSU can damage other components, so this is not the place to cut corners.

For a mainstream build in South Africa, a quality 550W to 600W unit with 80+ Bronze or Gold efficiency and an ATX 3.1 / 12V-2x6 connector is usually the smart buy: enough headroom for a 60-class GPU, low running costs, and a warranty that outlasts the rest of the build. Spend on efficiency and reliability rather than wattage you will never use.
