It does not buy a keyboard that is quiet, heavy or endlessly customisable, and the boards that pretend otherwise usually cut something you will notice. The first fork is switch technology. Entry mechanical boards give you per-key switches with a consistent actuation force and a definite point where the key registers, which is why they feel more predictable under fast repeated presses. Good membrane boards are quieter, shrug off a spilled drink more readily, and cost less for the same key count. Neither is wrong; they fail in different ways.

After that it comes down to rollover, keycap material, cable type and lighting, in roughly that order of importance.
