What IPS Does Well, and What It Costs You

In-plane switching aligns the liquid crystals parallel to the glass instead of perpendicular to it. That single design decision is why colour barely shifts when you move your head, why two screens side by side match each other, and why the technology took over the middle of the gaming display market.

It also sets the limits. The crystals never fully block the backlight, so native contrast sits near 1,000:1 on ordinary panels and around 2,000:1 on the IPS Black variants, behind VA and nowhere near a self-emissive display. In a lit room that gap is small. In a dark room watching a dark scene, it is the first thing you see. Panel type is listed on every monitor here.
