Are GPUs too expensive right now?

GPU pricing has been a pain point since the mining era, and prices haven't fully normalised. Each new generation seems to push the MSRP higher. In South Africa, add the Rand exchange rate and import duties on top. Are current GPU prices acceptable, or has the industry lost the plot?
