The four SA couriers for heavy tech

Four operators handle 95% of tech parcels in SA. Each has a clear sweet spot and an obvious weak point.

The Courier Guy — the SA default

Biggest national footprint, best small-business rates, the operator most online stores ship with. Their depots reach virtually every SA town. For a typical R20,000-R50,000 gaming PC, this is the sensible default — provided you insure properly.

Aramex — fast metros

Slightly faster than The Courier Guy between major metros (often next-day Joburg-CT-DBN), with the cleanest online tracking UI in SA. Pricier on rural routes. The right pick when speed matters more than rural reach.

RAM Hand-to-Hand — fragile premium

RAM's "Hand-to-Hand" service is fragile-handled by trained crew — no conveyor belts, no sorting drops, no stacking. The right pick for a 49-inch ultrawide, an expensive AIO build, or any glass-front custom rig. Expect to pay 30-50% more for the white-glove handling.

Berco Express — oversize freight

When you're shipping a full 4U server, dual-monitor workstation rack or a multi-PC office relocation, Berco handles freight-class items that the other three turn away. Quotes are bespoke; expect R1,500+ even for short routes.

Insurance — non-negotiable above R3,000

Every SA courier ships at owner's risk by default. The free R5,000 "basic cover" that some include in the rate is rarely enough for a gaming PC. The math:

Insurance premium = 1-2% of declared value.

• R15,000 gaming PC → R150-R300 insurance premium.
• R30,000 desktop → R300-R600 premium.
• R50,000 build → R500-R1,000 premium.
• R80,000 streamer rig → R800-R1,600 premium.

Declare the actual rand value. Under-declaring to save R200 in premium means a damage claim is capped at the declared figure. Over-declaring is fraud. Be honest, keep the original invoice handy.

Packaging — the double-box rule

Most damage claims in SA happen because of one thing: empty space inside the box. The shock from a drop or a stack collapse needs somewhere to go, and if there's air inside, the components absorb the impact.

Best-practice packaging for a desktop PC:

• Anti-static bag loose components. Remove the GPU and bag it separately for cards over R8,000 — the long PCB is the most-damaged component in shipping. Same for tower coolers — the heat sink can twist the CPU socket if the PC takes a knock.
• Foam-brace the case interior. Pack lightweight foam into open cavities — under the GPU, beside the cooler, anywhere a component could shift during a drop.
• Inner box. Original PC case box is ideal. If gone, use a corrugated box just barely bigger than the case.
• Corner protectors on the inner box — closed-cell foam or moulded pulp.
• Outer box, 10cm larger on every side. Fill the gap with bubble wrap, packing peanuts or air pillows. The gap is the shock absorber.
• Tape every seam. H-pattern tape on top and bottom — three strips, not one.
• Mark FRAGILE and ↑ THIS WAY UP on at least four sides. Drivers don't read one panel; they read whatever is up.

Pargo limits — size beats weight

Pargo is the affordable, pickup-point-based option a lot of SA buyers prefer. But for tech, the size limits rule out most of what you'd want to ship.

Some Pargo "PargoPlus" oversized points accept up to 15kg / 60cm parcels, but coverage is patchy. Always check the destination point's current spec before sending. For desktops and monitors, default to door-to-door courier.

Monitors and ultrawides — RAM is the safer pick

Monitor shipping has the highest damage rate of any tech category in SA — the panel is fragile, the box is long, and a wrong-way-up drop snaps the LCD. The rules:

• Ship in the original retail box if at all possible. The polystyrene moulding inside is engineered for shipping. A custom box rarely replicates the moulded support.
• For 27-32 inch panels: The Courier Guy is fine if double-boxed and insured. RAM is safer.
• For 34-49 inch ultrawides: RAM Hand-to-Hand is the only sensible choice. The premium is worth it.
• Never ship a monitor face-down. Mark THIS WAY UP on multiple sides and confirm orientation in the courier's special-handling notes.

Pickup scheduling — what to actually expect

All four couriers offer online pickup booking, but the SA reality is a 4-hour window, not a precise time. Plan accordingly.

• Same-day pickup: book before 10am for a 12pm-5pm slot in major metros only.
• Next-day pickup: standard, 8am-12pm or 1pm-5pm window choice.
• Fragile pickups (RAM): require a phone call, not a web form. Quote in writing first.
• Drop-off at depot is more reliable than pickup if your schedule is tight. Depots are open 8am-5pm weekdays, half-day Saturdays in most metros.

Damage claim flow — the 48-hour window

Every SA courier has a tight reporting window. Miss it and the claim is dead.

• Inspect on arrival. Open the box while the driver is still present if at all possible. Note any external damage on the proof-of-delivery signature.
• Photograph everything inside 24 hours. Outer box (every side), inner packaging, the damaged product itself, and the original packing material.
• Submit the damage claim within 48 hours. The Courier Guy and Aramex auto-reject claims filed after 48 hours.
• Provide the original invoice showing declared value matches your claim amount.
• Keep the damaged packaging intact until the claim settles. Couriers often request collection of the damaged item plus the box for their investigation.
• Expect 14-30 working days for claim resolution. Push back politely if it stretches — paying customers rarely lose.
