Memory rarely moves the headline average frame rate by much. Where it earns its place in a gaming build is the bottom end of the frame-time graph, the dips that register as a brief stumble while an engine loads a new area or a crowd of objects arrives on screen. Reviewers report that as the one per cent low, and it is the number that tracks memory behaviour most closely.

Two things drive that behaviour. The first is effective latency, the real time in nanoseconds it takes a request to come back, which combines the transfer rate with the CAS timing rather than either alone. The second is how the modules are physically arranged: how many are fitted, how many ranks each carries, and whether the pair was validated together at the factory.

A kit only delivers its rated behaviour once the stored performance profile is switched on in firmware. Left alone, a board runs the conservative JEDEC baseline stored on every module, which is a long way below what the sticker promises.
