A fibre router connects to the installed ONT and distributes the service; it does not replace the provider fibre termination in most homes.
A central, open and elevated position usually serves Wi-Fi better than a metal cabinet or distant corner. Base the decision on a longer Ethernet run if the ONT location is poor.
Possible arrangements include access-point mode or bridge mode, but double NAT can complicate games, VPNs and port forwarding. The listing should state which device will perform routing and DHCP.
The router must accommodate fixed PCs, televisions, consoles, access points and any wired backhaul unless a separate switch is added. Assess current wired devices plus near-term expansion before choosing a model.
A client with an older radio, weak signal or busy channel cannot use the full capability of a new router. Treat device link rates and measured coverage around the home as the practical test.
Keeping internet online usually requires compatible power for both the ONT and router for the desired runtime. Compare voltage, connector polarity and combined wattage before selecting a backup unit across the available options.
