How to Choose DDR5 RAM
DDR5 buying comes down to platform fit, capacity and speed. Confirm your board takes DDR5, choose 16GB or 32GB depending on workload, and pick a speed your CPU and motherboard support. Buy a matched kit and run dual-channel. The guide below covers each decision.
DDR5 is required by AMD AM5 and the latest Intel desktop platforms, and it will not fit a DDR4 board — the slots and boards differ. There's no DDR4/DDR5 cross-compatibility, and no single board takes both standards in the same slots. Check your motherboard's spec before buying; if it's an older AM4 or earlier Intel board, you need DDR4 instead.
16GB (2x8GB) is the minimum for modern gaming. 32GB (2x16GB) is the recommended choice if you stream while playing, keep lots of apps open, or do creative work like video editing. For pure gaming you rarely need more than 32GB, so put the saving toward speed or a better matched kit instead.
6000MHz to 6400MHz is the practical sweet spot for most DDR5 gaming builds. On current AMD Ryzen, around 6000MHz tends to pair best with the memory controller for stable, low-latency performance. Higher speeds exist but bring diminishing returns and tighter stability margins, so check your motherboard's supported speeds before chasing the fastest kit.
Both are one-click memory profiles that apply a kit's rated speed and timings. XMP is Intel's standard; EXPO is AMD's equivalent for Ryzen. Many DDR5 kits support both, but if you're on AMD, look for EXPO support specifically. Enable it in the BIOS after installing, or the RAM may default to a slower speed.
DDR5 includes on-die ECC, which corrects certain internal errors to keep the memory stable at high speeds. This is not the same as full server-grade ECC, which also protects data as it travels to the CPU. For gaming and general desktop use, on-die ECC is a built-in reliability feature, not a reason to buy specialised server modules.
