Start with where it will live. A dedicated dark room can use a lamp or laser home-cinema projector at around 2,000 to 2,500 lumens for deep contrast and rich colour. A bright meeting room or classroom needs 3,500 lumens or more so the image holds up against ambient light.
Then size the picture to the space. Throw ratio decides how far the projector sits from the wall for a given screen size: standard-throw needs several metres, short-throw works from about a metre, and ultra-short-throw laser units sit almost against the wall. Measuring your room first saves you buying the wrong class of projector.
